This month’s ‘One to Watch’ artist Bazzi sat down with Billboard to talk about his smash hit single, ‘Mine’ which recently went platinum, has nearly 70 million streams and over 35 million views on YouTube in just over a month.

The way he came up with the chorus and melody for “Mine” is pretty casual considering it’s something we all do during the summer; he was hanging out with friends at a pool.

He said, “I had a vision of what I wanted the entire song to look like…Which is cool, ‘cause it doesn’t always happen that easily. Sometimes it takes months for me to figure out what I want the painting to look like.”

A few days later he met up with producers Rice N Peas, and a month later they released the track.

Bazzi went on to discuss the lyrics to “Mine” saying, “It became more than just a love song to a girl I was with…Lyrics were just flowing out, because I had felt this certain love and acceptance from this girl, and I wanted to take that and on a bigger scale give that back to people.”

What makes the song catchy for people?

According to Bazzi, he thinks it’s the fact that the song is relatively short, “I think it almost forces the listener to hear the whole thing…I wanted people to really dissect what I was saying in those two minutes rather than giving them a little too much. I definitely think there’s something special and revolutionary about that.”
