With it being summertime, BBQ’s are a must! BUT be safe!

Over the weekend, I had a medical incident that involved swallowing a BBQ brush bristle!!

Yes, you heard right! A bristle from a BBQ brush got lodged in my throat.

Sunday night, I was at a friends BBQ having a burger when it all went down… literally!

I took the first bite of my burger I had prepared, when I swallowed, I had a sharp pain stabbing my left tonsil in my throat. Instantly, I ran to the bathroom freaking out. I was spitting up blood and salivating a lot!

I knew something was wrong.

I went to Langley hospital at 6pm on Sunday night. When I was there I had x-rays done. I was at the hospital for 5 hours. Once the doctor came and saw me, he told me I had heartburn and that I needed to take antacids. The doctor also said there was no metal shown in the x-rays! WTF?! I told him over and over again that something sharp was in my throat and needed to be taken out. He then told me it was heartburn again and to come back in 48 hours if it wasn’t better.

I left Langley hospital mad and headed for Surrey hospital. Surrey was even busier!! I waited in the ER for another 5 hours, but this time, saw no doctor at all! I decided to give up and go home. At this point, I had been waiting for 12 hours. I went home and got 2 hours of sleep. I was dead tired, but just worried about getting the metal taken out.

When I woke up, I headed to a walk-in clinic in Cloverdale. There was no wait. Which made me ecstatic! The doctor told me that if the x-rays from Langley hospital showed nothing then there is nothing in my throat. I told him that something was stabbing my throat and that I could feel it with my finger. He took a look and said nothing was there. I left even more frustrated, and headed to a walk-in clinic in Langley. Absolutely no one believed that I had metal in my throat. And even though they kept looking, they couldn’t see the bristle poking out. *I can’t believe that no one believed me and that I was having to try and convince them metal was lodged in my throat.*

I went home, and talked to my mom and dad. I eventually asked my mom to wash her hands and feel my tonsil. Thanks mom for doing that… I know it was gross but I appreciate it! She felt the metal and told me I needed to get it removed ASAP!

I headed to Abbotsford Hospital around 1pm yesterday (Monday afternoon). This was 19 hours after I initially swallowed the brush bristle!

I waited for 3 hours (which was a breeze compared to the other places) and saw a doctor. Shout out to nurse Sarb, Dr. Nickel and Abbotsford Regional Hospital. You are awesome!

Dr. Nickel and nurse Sarb both looked and saw the metal in my mouth. I was given a numbing agent and in a matter of just two minutes the metal brush bristle was removed!

I spent almost 24 hours trying to get the metal removed from my throat. What an ordeal! I am so happy it is all over and that I am healthy and safe!

PS. Please throw out your metal bristle BBQ brushes! Don’t let this happen to you!

“Hey guys I am an avid BBQ person. You have to choose the right BBQ scraper. The cheap ones will lose their bristles over time. If you invest in a brand name one like Weber or napoleon they tend to last longer and it is very so much like a toothbrush you need to replace them often.”
