Can the average person tell the difference between McDonald’s signature sauces and condiments already available in grocery stores? This week, McDonald’s Canada made the blockbuster announcement that they’ll be selling bottles of their Big Mac, McChicken and Filet-o-Fish sauces in grocery stores across Canada in the coming months, and many people made similar remarks:

But then the defenders chimed in:

So today on the show we decided to put these claims to the test with a blind McTaste Test. We invited in a panel of McDonalds enthusiasts and with the help of the McDonald’s on West Broadway, Vancouver, we had our judges try the following samples:

-Round 1) Filet o Fish Sauce vs Heinz Tartar Sauce

-Round 2) McChicken Sauce vs Hellman’s Mayonnaise

-Round 3) Big Mac Sauce vs Kraft Thousand Island Dressing
Here’s what happened:

Recap of the results:
-1/3 of our judges could correctly identify the Filet O Fish sauce
-3/3 of our judges could correctly identify the McChicken sauce
-2/3 of our judges could correctly identity the Big Mac sauce

Our Conclusion:

So the big takeaway here is that there’s a BIG difference between McChicken sauce and mayo…it’s definitely not the same. Perhaps you could try regular tartar sauce if you wanted to make a homemade version of a Filet O Fish, but if you were to try to make a Big Mac on the BBQ at home, most people would know if you tried using Thousand Island dressing.

In this very simple experiment, we conclude that there’s definitely a reason for the fanfare over the McDonald’s signature sauces coming to grocery stores in Canada very soon.
