The future of whales and dolphins at the Vancouver Aquarium is very much up in the air…

Last night, the Vancouver Park Board voted unanimously to have the Parks Control bylaw amended, and prohibit the display of whales, dolphins, and porpoises at the Vancouver Aquarium.

Since the deaths of Aurora, and her daughter Qila in November last year, the treatment of cetaceans have been a major issue at the Vancouver Aquarium. They are still unsure what caused their deaths.

The Aquarium made an announcement recently, saying that they would be introducing two new belugas before phasing out their research program and the display of belugas by 2029.

As for the next step, the Park Board will now investigate the situation and will present the best way to execute the amendment. We could hear more about the situation as early as May.

How would you feel about having the cetaceans banned from display?
