Tegan and Sara are the smartest and coolest pop duo around.

Last night they played the Queen Elizabeth Theatre and left with a little piece of my heart.

Before the show I had the opportunity to interview the sisters backstage, and (at the great risk of sounding cheesy) found them to be inspiring women.

Originally from Calgary, Tegan and Sara now call Vancouver and Los Angeles home. We touched on the US presidential race, which Tegan said she finds “sad… because I think it’s showcasing the worst parts of America.”

We also talked feminism, the evolution of their breakup ballads and commiserated over societal pressure to marry and procreate.

They are the type of women who renew my faith in the idea of the pop culture role model.

Their latest album Love You To Death is a bright pop-driven throwback to late 80’s ballads and mid 90’s dance beats. They list Swedish songstress Robyn (Show me Love, Dancing on My Own) as a big inspiration.

At last night’s concert they made sure to play some old classics, like my personal favourite Walking With a Ghost.

New hits like Boyfriend and 100X  (reportedly about their relationship as sisters) made an appearance of course.

Sidenote: the 100X video is so adorable it gives me cute aggression.

Andrew was there hanging out with some listeners in the private suite.

I hope they run for public office one day. They’ve got my vote.
