Australians are feeling the love following a majority “Yes” vote for same-sex marriage equality yesterday. With a record turnout of 79.5% (higher than the last elections in Canada and the U.S), 61.6% of participants voted in support of gay marriage in a postal survey that ensures Parliament will consider legalizing same-sex weddings this year. While the results of this poll are “non-binding”, it’s a clear message to move forward and a “no” vote would have put marriage equality off the political agenda, perhaps for years.

Meanwhile it was back in 2005 that Canada became the first country outside Europe and the fourth country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage nationwide after the enactment of the Civil Marriage Act.
