Ouch! People are inking tiny dots and geometric designs on their cuticles in the latest tattoo beauty craze making the rounds on Instagram.

This trend may have been partly inspired by Rihanna, who has been rocking cuticle tattoos for a few years now along with some intricate patterns on the back of her hand to imitate Mehndi. Mehndi is a form of body art from Ancient India, in which decorative designs are created on a person’s body usually using henna.

A couple things to keep in mind though before you run to your artist to get your cuticles tattoo’d. Because the area of your body is mostly bone, be prepared for it to be VERY painful. Similar to the pain associated to tattooing other boney areas of your body like the ribs or top of the foot. Possibly even worse.

But, everyone’s level of pain tolerance is different. In the original article by Today, Lily Valliere, 39, recently got her cuticles inked, and she described the experience as “uncomfortable, like little paper cuts.”

Yeah I don’t know if I could handle that. Paper cuts on your fingers are AWFUL.

Another thing to keep in mind is when your tattoo is healing, because it’s on your hand, those areas are very hard to heal properly and there is a very good chance that the design could heal wrong. That is a reason why a number of artists I know won’t even tattoo people’s hands because it is so easy for the art to be ruined or disfigured over time.
