One of the best stories of the week has to be when Johnny Depp surprised kids and families at BC Children’s Hospital for over 5 hours, in-character as Captain Jack Sparrow. Listener Courtney is currently at BC Children’s with her 5-year-old daughter Kyla and joined us on-air this morning to share her experience meeting the Pirates of the Caribbean star.

Kyla’s mom explains the touching interaction:

“He got down to her level and had a full interaction with her. She looked right into his eyes.

Then he gave us each a hug with a little tear in his eyes and whispered, ‘You know, she’s beautiful.'”

The visit truly was a surprise to the patients and many of the staff working on Monday at BC Children’s Hospital. “They just came in and asked if we would like to meet a pirate“, recalls Kyla’s grandmother. “He went to every room.
The joy that day was a two-way street. Last December, Depp visited the Great Ormond Street hospital in London for Christmas. He told reporters, “For me it’s a gift. They give me the giftWhen my daughter was ill at Great Ormond Street, it was the darkest period of my life. I’d always done these visits but after that experience the visits became more and more important.

Listen to our full interview here where they share more of their time with Johnny Depp and what he smells like in person (we just had to know).
