Heads up if you’re thinking about buying a new vehicle: the U-S Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is out with a troubling report.

The IIHS researchers analyzed fatal crash data collected by the federal government between 2012 and 2015. They found overall, smaller vehicles on the road don’t protect occupants the way that larger ones do.

For the study, the IIHS looked at 2014 model cars and earlier equivalent models. Of the models with the lowest rates of driver deaths per year, more than half were mid-size or larger. Eleven vehicles, including the Mazda CX-9 and the Jeep Cherokee, had zero driver deaths between 2012 and 2015.

The safest cars, based on the research, had no deaths over the period:

  • Audi A6 4WD
  • Audi Q7 4WD
  • BMW 535i
  • BMW 535xi
  • Jeep Cherokee
  • Lexus CT 200h
  • Lexus RX 350
  • Mazda CX-9
  • Mercedes-Benz M-Class
  • Toyota Tacoma Double Cab

The most dangerous, which all had over 70 deaths per “Overall driver deaths per million registered vehicle years”:

  • Hyundai Accent (104)
  • Kia Rio (102)
  • Scion tC (101)
  • Chevrolet Spark (96)
  • Nissan Versa (95)
  • Ford Fiesta (83)
  • Kia Soul (82)
  • Dodge Challenger (81)
  • Nissan Titan Crew Cab (73)
  • Nissan Sentra (72)
