What would you do if the stranger in front of you paid for your coffee? Has it ever happened to you? Would you continue to pay-it-forward? Inspired by an incredible story in Pennsylvania where a chain began around 9 a.m. at the drive-thru, when one unidentified person paid for the person behind them. The chain reaction went an unbelievable 160 people deep!! That could be one of the longest streaks ever. So we decided to conduct a social experiment on-air and see how far it would continue if we started one here in Vancouver.
We walked into the Starbucks at Cambie and Broadway and bought a gift card for the employees to pass along to one of their customers (huge thanks to Roselyn for helping us out and being part of today’s experiment!). While we wrote the hashtag #PayitForward on the back, we didn’t mention it was a requirement to pay for the person behind them.

Listen to what went down on-air this morning:

In case you can’t listen to the audio at work…the streak ended at……

1 person.

Now it could be said that perhaps that person who received our free drink will pay it forward in a different way later today or in the future. Who knows?

But maybe our experiment would do better under some different circumstances. One KiSS RADiO listener suggested due to the price point of their average coffee order, we’d have more success at Tim Horton’s. Another listener said we might have a longer streak in drive-thru.

So Monday morning at 8:20am we’re going to re-conduct the experiment with these new adjustments and see if the results will be any different. What’s your prediction?
